Council Directs Staff to Explore Transit Connection for the Northlander
Timmins City Council has given Timmins Transit the green light to explore a six-month pilot program that would provide first mile/last mile transit connection for Ontario Northland’s Northlander passenger rail service.

The initiative would align local transit service with the expected arrival and departure times of the Northlander train, helping residents and visitors travel between the Timmins-Porcupine rail station and designated stops across the city.

The return of the Northlander passenger rail service is expected this year, with preliminary information from Ontario Northland suggesting arrival and departure times that fall outside the current operating hours of Timmins Transit.

Potential service models could include limited early-morning and late-evening service, on-demand transit, a dedicated connection route, or other flexible transit solutions. A pilot program would allow the City to evaluate real-world demand and operational impacts before making any long-term decisions.

Staff will return to Council with a proposed program overview for final approval before any service is implemented.
