Algonquin Blvd. E. Scheduled to Re-open on Thursday, November 21, 2024 

Algonquin Blvd. is scheduled to re-open to traffic between Cedar St. and Brunette Rd. on Thursday, November 21, 2024.

This week, contractors will finish temporary line painting and begin turning on the traffic signals between Cedar St. and Brunette Rd., including the new traffic light and crossing on Algonquin Blvd. adjacent to Hollinger Park. The new traffic light for pedestrians and snowmobiles will add another stop along Algonquin Blvd. to allow for safe passage and access to service stations from one side of Algonquin to the other, particularly for snowmobiles accessing the trail network. This is a timed light with a standard green, yellow, and red sequence. Traffic will be stopped for three situations: on-demand pedestrian crossing, on-demand snowmobile crossing (seasonal only), and timed for left-turns exiting KFC.

Starting today (November 18), crews will begin to remove the temporary traffic controls (traffic lights) at Brunette Rd./Second Ave. and Second Ave./Mountjoy St. S. Over the next 3 days, the temporary stop signs on Sixth Ave. (east-west traffic) will be removed. The traffic lights in the downtown core will return to signaled lights on weekdays between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Temporary speed limits on Airport Rd. from Laforest Rd. through the area of the Kraft Creek Bridge (approximately 1.25 km's) will be removed.

The temporary heavy commercial truck traffic detour will end once Algonquin Blvd. re-opens.

Timmins Transit’s Route 16 stop at Park Road Square will resume once Algonquin Blvd. is open.

Reminder: The stop sign on Pine St. N. at Sixth Ave. is now a permanent 4-way stop.

Once the detours are removed and the road is open, please use extra caution when driving. Obey all posted traffic signage. Be patient with other drivers as we re-learn the original routes.

Thank you for your continued patience as we’ve navigated 7 months of construction. This section completes all three downtown segments.

City Hall Parking Lot closed October 28-November 8, 2024 
Please be advised that the City Hall parking lot on Cedar St. N. will be closed for parking and to motor vehicles from October 25 - November 8, 2024. Both the front hall and accessible entrance to City Hall (elevator access) will remain open.

Cedar St. N. will be closed north of the laneway behind City Hall. Work is being done to connect the City's sanitary sewer system to new underground infrastructure as part of Connecting Link construction. A temporary pedestrian crossing will be installed across Algonquin Blvd. E. at Cedar St. to accommodate parking in the municipal lots south of Algonquin.

The wests sidewalk along Cedar St. N. will also remain accessible, with the construction zone clearly marked with signage and fencing.

Mattagami Bridge pedestrian underpass closed effective August 6, 2024 
Work to grade and repave the Mattagami Bridge pedestrian underpass starts on Tuesday, August 6, 2024. The path will be closed for approximately 2 weeks while work is completed.

Rehabilitation of the Mattagami Bridge as part of this year's Connecting Link construction includes work to improve the pedestrian underpass and extend the paved path to the Mountjoy Farmer's Market pavilion.

Installation of Dedicated Snowmobile Crossing Starts Monday 

Installation of the dedicated snowmobile and pedestrian crossing on Algonquin Blvd. E. will begin Monday, July 8, 2024. Contractors will be in town to stage traffic controls and begin installing the electrical infrastructure like conduits and pole bases.

The crossing is being added following the removal of the Algonquin overpass. Snowmobile riders will be able to traverse Algonquin using a signalized crossing from Hollinger Park to the Hydro One easement to the north. The crossing will operate with a standard red, yellow, and green traffic light cycle that starts on-demand when prompted by a pedestrian or snowmobile rider. The crossing for pedestrians and snowmobiles are separated for safety, flanking either side of the east entrance to KFC. Each crossing will be clearly marked, with separate crossing signals.

During construction, Algonquin Blvd. E. will be reduced to one lane in each direction at the point of construction.

Temporary Pedestrian Crossing at Pine and Algonquin Relocated 

The temporary pedestrian crossing at Pine St. and Algonquin Blvd. E. will be moved to east of the Cedar St. and Algonquin Blvd. E. intersection effective Thursday, June 6, 2024.

This is to facilitate construction work that is now encroaching on the Pine St. intersection.

Pedestrians will now cross Algonquin Blvd. E. at Cedar St.

Front Entrance to City Hall Closed for Construction Effective Thursday, May 23, 2024 
The front entrance to City Hall on Algonquin Blvd. E. will be closed effective Thursday, May 23, 2024 to facilitate Connecting Link construction. The public can access City Hall through the accessible entrance off Cedar St. N. using the elevator to the first floor and Service Timmins.

Starting Thursday, contractors will start pushing temporary fencing back and begin to remove the brickwork along the sidewalks on Algonquin Blvd. E. starting at Cedar St. and working east to Pine St. Work includes new curbs and sidewalks as part of the reconstruction of the roadway and replacement of underground services.

Residents are reminded that Service Timmins is also available by phone at 705-264-1331 during regular business hours or online through the City’s Customer Service Portal at service.timmins.ca.

Downtown Traffic Lights on Pine and Cedar Become Flashing Red 

Effective Thursday, May 09, 2024 at 6:00 p.m., the traffic lights on Pine St. S. at Second Ave. and Third Ave. will remain 4-way flashing red stops. This applies to the traffic lights on Cedar St. S. at Second Ave. and Third Ave. as well. 

The change means that motorists should be prepared to stop. The first vehicle to enter has the right-of-way at a four-way stop. If two or more cars stop at the same time, right-of-way goes to the vehicle on the right.

The changes are designed to improve traffic flow in downtown Timmins around the busy Second Ave. Connecting Link detour. We appreciate your cooperation.

Connecting Link Bridge Rehabilitation Begins May 06, 2024 

Rehabilitation work on the Mattagami River Bridge and Porcupine River Bridge begins May 06, 2024 with mobilization and installation of signs for both bridges and traffic control set up.

Asphalt removal is scheduled for Thursday, May 09 and Friday, May 10, 2024.

Work on both bridges is being carried out at the same time to expedite the work schedule. Motorists should be prepared to slow and merge. Both bridges will have lanes reduced to one way in each direction.

Full Downtown Connecting Link Segment Closes Monday: Contractors Begin Removing Asphalt 
Work on the final downtown segment of the Connecting Link moves ahead Monday, April 15 with full closure of Algonquin Blvd. E. between Balsam St. and west of Brunette Rd. The current road closure will be expanded along Algonquin Blvd. E. to east of the Balsam St. intersection, and will close the Pine St. and Cedar St. intersections.

Grinding operations will start early next week to remove layers of asphalt from the road surface. This is expected to take 3-5 days. During that time, pedestrians crossing Algonquin Blvd. north to south will be able to cross at the Balsam St. and Brunette Rd. intersections on either end of the construction zone. This is temporary. Once initial grinding operations are complete, a pedestrian crossing will be placed at Pine St.

Sidewalks along the east and west of Algonquin Blvd. E. will remain open while grinding is completed, safely blocked off from the active construction area.

Temporary traffic detours are already in place, with detour signage installed before Brunette Rd. and Mountjoy St. Motorists are asked to detour at Brunette Rd. or Mountjoy St. S., along Second Ave. Drivers should be prepared to stop at temporary traffic lights on Second Ave. at Brunette Rd. and Mountjoy St. S. Heavy truck traffic is being diverted at Shirley St. and Hwy. 655.

“City contractors are expediting site preparation, including removal of the existing asphalt,” says Scott Tam, Director of Growth and Infrastructure. “Once the overpass is removed, they will be ready to start work on excavation. We are closing the full construction zone to provide space for staging of materials and equipment, instead of using valuable municipal parking space in the downtown core.”

Removal of the overpass began earlier this month, with contractors removing ballast rock, saw cutting the concrete to begin removal, and drilling to remove concrete from embedded steel. The steel will be later cut and recycled.

Connecting Link Detours Have Started: Demolition Starts Next Week  
Contractors have implemented the temporary traffic detours for Connecting Link construction. Traffic is now being diverted at Brunette Rd. and Mountjoy St. S., via Second Ave. Heavy truck traffic is using the standard detour from Shirley St. to Hwy. 655

Detours were put into effect early following the building fire on Spruce St. S., which closed Algonquin Blvd. from Pine St. to west of Brunette Rd. The road closure will now remain in effect as contractors prepare to start demolition on the Algonquin overpass early next week.

Temporary traffic lights have been installed on Second Ave. at Brunette Rd. and Mountjoy St. S. The lights at Brunette Rd. and Second Ave. are set to flashing and the intersection will work as a 3-way stop to help keep traffic moving. Motorists are reminded that the first vehicle to arrive at the intersection and come to a complete stop, has the right-of-way. If two or more cars stop at the same time, right-of-way goes to the vehicle(s) on the right. All stop signs along Second Ave. will remain in place.

The detours are designed to help divert traffic around the construction zone, while maintaining traffic flow and limiting congestion. If you are traveling around the downtown core, it is recommended to use the full detour, from Brunette to Mountjoy St. S. along Second Ave., or use Second Ave. as your access point to downtown businesses south of Algonquin Blvd. E. Once demolition of the overpass is complete, Algonquin Blvd. E. will be closed at Balsam St. until construction is complete. Demolition of the overpass is expected to take 2-3 weeks. Motorists should expect some minor delays during construction.

Work is also confirmed this summer for both bridges along the Connecting Link. Porcupine River Bridge and Mattagami River Bridge will be rehabilitated with temporary lane reductions beginning sometime in May. Site preparation has already begun on the Porcupine River Bridge, with installation of netting underneath the bridge to deter nesting birds.
