Shared Safety and Well-being Outcomes

Quarter 1: January - March 2024

The Shared Safety and Well-Being Committee meets monthly to review what different groups in Timmins and other agencies are doing to improve community safety and well-being. We created a spreadsheet to track these efforts, focusing on five key areas: community involvement, engagement, anti-stigma education, business safety, and indigenous relationships.

We looked at what initiatives were already in place and brainstormed new ideas. Our ongoing goal is to avoid duplication and enhance existing programs where possible.

Looking ahead to Q2, we are gearing up for 2 significant initiatives: The May Community Clean-up and the June ParticipACTION Community Challenge

Challenges

The committee faces challenges with agencies already working on shared safety and well-being initiatives, leading to potential duplication. It's vital to mitigate this and highlight existing efforts effectively. Additionally, shared safety and well-being intersects with other pillars, making it hard to focus solely on our objectives without addressing broader social issues handled by other committees.

Crime Severity Index Timmins

The Crime Severity Index (CSI) tracks changes in the severity of police-reported crime by accounting for both the amount of crime reported by police and the relative seriousness of these crimes.

We all have a role to play in crime prevention: from early interventions with at-risk youth, to being watchful and caring neighbors. As Timmins grows, our success as a community will depend on our shift of focus to growth and possibility.

It is important to note that CSI does not differentiate between incidents that are a danger to the public compared to more isolated incidents.

Attendance of Pilot Focus Group Project

Implementing community engagement sessions as a pilot project for July to September marked a pivotal step towards fostering stronger bonds. During these sessions, community members were given a platform to voice their concerns and ideas. Over 8 hours of engagement allowed for meaningful dialogue and community-driven solutions. A wrap report has been prepared are will be shared with Mayor and Council. In addition, the Shared Safety and Well-Being committee will lead the way in tackling some of the priorities.
